The Giant’s Causeway, has long been renowned for its columns of layered basalt, and has attracted visitors for centuries. It is the only World Heritage Site in N Ireland. It is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is rumoured to have been created by legendary giant – Finn MacCool. The attraction has long awaited a Visitors’ Centre, to showcase the wealth of local and natural history abounding in the Causway area.
The Visitors Centre itself, shortlisted for The 2013 RIBA Stirling Prize, was designed and built in keeping with the landscape, and for that reason, the centre, which houses a cafe, exhibition space and a shop, is largely underground. It was designed by Heneghan Peng architects and the build managed by main contractor Gilbert Ash. It was a great honour to be involved in glazing this project and we are delighted with the results.
